Mixed Media
Although painting is my primary passion, I also enjoy creating pictures using a variety of media, including pastel, pencil, computer editting and digital design (and sometimes a mixture of these). If you would like a piece such as this, please get in touch. Click on or hover over the pictures below to see titles and descriptions. If you click in the space underneath this set of pictures, more will be revealed.
This piece is a work in process. The eagle is painted with acrylic on canvas and is going to be part of a larger piece. However, I have edited this image on the computer to create this basic eagle design.
I painted the image using watercolour and acrylic. I then edited the design on the computer.
I created this image as an encouragement to myself to keep praising God no matter what circumstances I find myself in. Praise and thanksgiving can bring about change (of our perspective at the very least) and show us the way forwards when there doesn't seem to be a way. A friend of mine put it like this: You can praise your way out of any situation! Psalm 25 was also an inspiration to me. This image was made using charcoal and acrylic paint. I then edited it on the computer.
I was reading Hebrews 3 and 4 in the Bible, which talks about the rest of God. I had this image of a place of stillness and peace with God in the midst of the busy-ness of life.
This piece began as a simple pastel drawing which I created during a time of worship at Church. It was inspired by the words of a psalm (139 v 9-10) which say 'If I rise on the wings of the dawn and settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.' I later edited this image on the computer to make the colours more bold and to give it the mottled effect you can see here.
What kind of treasure are you storing up in your heart? Whatever you are dwelling on, this is what will overflow from you. I have represented treasure as pearls in this picture as the Bible uses pearls to depict things which are of great value. The Bible is also pictured as, for me, this is where I will find pearls and this is what I want to be dwelling on. See also Luke 2:19; Matthew 12:34,35; Matthew 13:45-46.
I was inspired to draw these two pictures during a time of worship when many of the songs were talking about how God can help us to overcome the difficult circumstances we may be facing in life.
Similarly to my piece 'An Eagle's Eye View,' this pastel piece depicts an eagle soaring high above a mountainous landscape, to symbolise seeing from a higher perspective. I edited this image on the computer to brighten the colours and give it the mottled effect you can see here.
This image is part of a large scale, timed piece that I painted recently (finished within 30 minutes). It was painted in acrylic and then edited on the computer. The complete image shows a swan in the centre of a lake with a city scape in the distance. This represents finding a place of peace in the middle of the noise and busyness of life.
I drew this picture based on a prophetic word that was given at my Church. It started out as a pencil sketch and I then added the colour and the writing on the computer. I wanted to show that God has left footprints for us to follow. We are not trying to figure out the way forward on our own.
I was asked to create this image for someone. The person who asked me to create it later explained it like this: 'Trees in the Bible represent the place in which we meet with God and I saw a picture of a tree embedded with jewels and producing fruit of jewels as well. I believe God was saying that the discovery of precious things is an integral part of meeting with Him and it also produces precious things of value.' This piece began as a sketch and I then edited it on the computer.
I was asked to draw a picture based on the idea of 'truth guided by grace' where 'truth' was depicted as an arrow and 'grace' was depicted as a bow. This was the image I came up with. I drew it by hand and then edited it on the computer.
This is another piece which I drew during a meeting at Church. It represents God's strength in our weakness.
This drawing was inspired by a talk that was given at Church. The preacher spoke about the seed that God has given us to sow into the lives of others. This 'seed' could be something that seems small and insignificant to us, like a simple act of kindness, but which could have a huge and unforeseen impact in the life of that person, just as a tiny seed has the potential to become a huge tree.
I painted this during a Church meeting and added the wording on the computer. This piece is based on what the Bible says about Jesus being the cornerstone.
I love painting and drawing eagles! Eagles are used as a powerful metaphor in the Bible time and time again. I painted this eagle in preparation for my piece 'An Eagle's Eye View.' I edited this image on the computer to give it the bold colouring you can see here.
This picture is inspired by a Bible verse which talks about God replacing a heart of stone with a heart of flesh. I drew a sketch and then edited and added colour on the computer.
I drew this picture based on a prophetic word that was given at my Church. It started out as a biro sketch. I then edited this and added the text on the computer. I drew a path next to a lake, as the prophetic word reminded me of a verse in Psalm 23 which says ‘He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.’
I was asked to draw this picture based on a prophetic word that was given at my Church. I wanted to emphasise that some of things that we have or do in our lives may look real and important to us (the wooden sword) but we need to lay them down nonetheless because God, our father, has something much more real and significant for us to pick up. This picture started as a sketch. I then edited it and added the text on the computer.
I was asked to create this picture based on a Bible verse (2 Corinthians 6 v 7) which talks about ‘weapons of righteousness.’ I created it digitally and then edited it further to add the text and give the effect of flames on the swords. I felt that fire could represent purity and righteousness.
I drew this picture based on an old photo of me with my mother and sister as a present for Mother's Day. I created the design using pencil crayon. I then added the background and writing on the computer. See my 'Cards' page for more designs for special occasions.
This picture was inspired by an article I read about waiting on God which used the analogy of a blindfolded horse. I did some more reading and found out that horses are often blindfolded during training as a means of teaching them to trust their master and listen to his voice. This encouraged me that, when I can't see the next step to take, maybe God is teaching me to trust Him and listen to His voice.
A digital piece, which started with me dripping red paint on a white page. This speaks of how God loved the world so much that he sent his son, Jesus, to shed his blood for us.
I was inspired to paint this piece by the words of a worship song which says 'It's always like spring time with you.' I wanted to represent the idea that God causes us to flourish and be fruitful in all seasons of life. I edited it on the computer to mellow the colouring slightly.
I was asked to create an image based on the idea of the Church as the bride of Christ, with the groom waiting for his bride, an expression of joy on his face. I was given the verses Revelation 21 v 1-4 to work from. This is the picture that came to mind: The Church as a beautiful city descending a mountain. This image was created using pastel and then computer edited.
I was asked to design this logo for a prayer room, incorporating swords, a shield, a heart and the words ‘Love and War.’ This is the design I came up with. I created it using coloured pencils and then edited it and added the text using a computer.
I was asked to create an image depicting prayer as a sword. I saw this image of a person kneeling in prayer with a sword which is breaking the ice. The ice could depict anything but the image is meant to represent the breakthrough that we can experience through prayer. I felt that the verse matched the picture perfectly as it talks about praying at all times; persevering in prayer. This was a pastel piece which I then computer edited.
I sketched this simple picture during a Church meeting and then edited it on the computer to make it more colourful. It shows someone holding a flag raised as a sign of victory. The person is also standing on top of a mountain range, to represent that all things have been placed beneath our feet and nothing can overcome us.
This sketch was inspired by the following quote from 'Mere Christianity' by CS Lewis: When you teach a child writing, you hold its hand while it forms the letters: that is, it forms the letters because you are forming them. We love and reason because God loves and reasons and holds our hand while we do it.
The tree in this picture represents our life, comparing life's journey to climbing a tree. The person in this picture has stopped on a particular branch and has found fruit. While we are on life's journey we sometimes need to stop and appreciate the place we are currently in. If we do this, and do not constantly strive towards what is ahead, we may find treasure. This piece was created using collage and acrylic and was then computer edited.
